I was teaching at Vassar when Shoemaker-Levy 9 hit Jupiter. We had a live feed (in the astronomy dept) from JPL, and so I got to see those impacts within a couple of hours. (It changed my view of world history and mythology forever).
Arthur Clarke was involved in more things than he could talk about, so that is why I think he turned to SF. It's hard not to make the Jupiter/2001 connection after seeing such things!
